The African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) 2008 to be held in Yenagoa in the Beyelsa State of Nigeria, on April 26 has been launched in Accra.
It was an occasion for paying homage and an occasion for looking more critically at the dying Ghanaian movie industry.

Mr Samuel Kwaku Boafo, Minister of Culture and Chieftancy used the occasion for both, but was particularly hard on stakeholders of Ghana's film industry.
In his launching address, the Minister lamented that "it is unfortunate that despite her pioneering role in the African film industry, today Ghana is experiencing mixed fortunes as far as the production of quality movies are concerned.

It is my prayer that Ghana draws enough inspirations from the high quality of professionalism and commitment exhibited in Nollywood (Nigeria) productions to revive and to revolutionalise her flagging industry, instead of attempting to copy and incorporate the styles and techniques of others. That is not professional".

Mr Boafo said the film industry is one area for employment and a good source of economic growth as well as tax base for government. He said the United States of America, India and Nigeria, as the world's leading film makers are making millions of dollars yearly, while providing jobs for thousands of people.

The Minister noted that Nollywood is thriving because investors have identified it's huge investment potentials and have accordingly giving it the deserving financial support to reap maximum profits in future.
He therefore encouraged investors in other African countries especially Ghana, to target the movie industry as an area to do businessnow.

The Chief Executive Officer of AMAA awards, Ms Peace Anyian Osigme said the awards scheme which started in 2005 is conceptualised as an annual celebration of the brightest and the best in African movie.
"It is about class and style, glitz and razzmatazz. It is the biggest gathering of movie makers across the African continent and the diaspora. It is to show to the world that the rating of Nollywood (Nigeria) as the third largest producers of movie is real.
As part of activities marking the awards, a charity ball in aid of sickle cell patients would be held on April 24, 2008 in Nigeria.
Behind the academy are film producers, directors, designers, writers, critics and scholars who have faith in a renascent African film.
United Bank of Africa (UBA) is the title sponsor of the awards.
