Pollination by bees is crucial to food production, but bee populations worldwide are dramatically dwindling, falling victim to disease. Sub Saharan bees, on the other hand, have shown no sign of being affected. Until now. Since last year, the most serious of bee diseases, American foulbrood, has been discovered in South Africa, threatening both bee populations and the livelihood of beekeepers across the country. Despite this, many beekeepers refuse to tamper with nature and compromise the genetic integrity of the African bee. Will the bees be able to build a natural tolerance to the disease before the destruction it wreaks has gone too far?
