The Jury for the 2017 AMAA is thrilled to share in the joy of today`s occasion. We are also delighted to be a part of this great brand that celebrates the cinema of Africa and the African Diaspora. We consider the move to host the 2017 edition of AMAA in Lagos, one of the iconic international cities of the world, a significant development. Apart from being the entertainment hub in Africa, Lagos is central to black culture and heritage the world over. We thank the government and people of Lagos state for accepting to host what has become established as the singular most important continental film award event that rewards and encourages African creativity and originality.
As Jurors, it is a privilege to have been entrusted with the task of determining the films and filmmakers that best deserve the AMAA awards. With more than 800 submissions from all around the world, we are witnessing an increasingly accomplished global platform.
But we must particularly commend the growing achievements in quality documentary filmmaking on the continent. This development is reflected in the quality and quantity of entries we have received this year. I must say that the Jury was very impressed by the strength of the documentary category. I think it is essential that the perspective of African filmmakers on the realities of the continent is recognized and valued. Therefore, we have decided to mark this promising development of quality and quantity in the documentary category, with an additional award.
This year, the THE SPECIAL JUY PRIZE, will be given to an outstanding documentary film. For the courage of the director and for the capacity of revealing one of the root problems of his country Mali, we give the SPECIAL JURY PRIZE TO the film ‘The Legacy of the Hills' [Les Héritiers de la colline] by Ousmane Samassekou.
PLEASE CAN THE DIRECTOR STEP UP TO RECEIVE THE AWARD?
As African cinema grows and takes its rightful place among the cinemas of the world, it is our hope that the African Movie Academy Awards, will continue to be the flagship platform through which the whole continent and the Diaspora expresses appreciation and support to the art of filmmaking.
I now present the envelopes containing the winners to this great woman The President of the AMAA Peace Anyiam Osigwe, MFR
Enjoy the rest of the evening

Berni Goldblat
