Après vingt ans d'absence, Sue doit retourner dans son Égypte natale pour voir sa mère Fairouz, une aristocrate excentrique dont elle s'est éloignée. Ce surprenant voyage, qui la mènera du Caire à Alexandrie, teinté de souvenirs lointains, de nostalgie et de sentiments mitigés à l'égard de son passé, permettra à Sue de devenir la femme autonome qu'elle devrait être.
